Kayser-Fleischer rings

Kayser-Fleischer rings are rings of a yellow-brownish color that encircle the iris of the eye. They consist of copper deposits (from where the colour is derived). Their presence is a very important diagnostic sign of the Wilson disease.

What kind of diseases can be associated with Kayser-Fleischer rings?

The presence of Kayser-Fleischer rings is a specific sign of the Wilson disease. Rarely it can occur in other disorders affecting the liver.

What is the therapy for Kayser-Fleischer rings?

The Kayser-Fleischer rings are not handled directly, but through curing the disease from which they originate.

When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of Kayser-Fleischer rings?

The Kayser-Fleischer rings are generally visible through a slit lamp, a particular tool used in ophthalmology, and are therefore observable during a visit to an ophthalmologist. Sometimes, however, they are visible to the naked eye. In that case, you should contact your doctor for a consultation.
