Ageusia (Impaired taste)

Ageusia is the loss of taste and can be caused by an infection of the upper respiratory tract, head trauma, medication and diseases that can be connected with the loss of smell (anosmia). Often the condition does not result in total loss of smell. When it comes to a reduction of the sense of taste it results in hypogeusia, while when the taste is altered it results in dysgeusia.

What kind of diseases can be associated with ageusia?

The following diseases may be associated with ageusia:

  • Nasal polyps
  • Sinusitis

Remember that this is not an exhaustive list and it is highly recommended to consult your doctor, in case of symptom’s persistence.

What is the therapy for ageusia?

When drugs cause the loss of taste it can be resolved by stopping the intake or changing the dose. Be aware that only your doctor can safely change the prescribed therapy. It is therefore not recommended to make personal decisions on the medications you are taking.
When the cause is a specific disease, it is necessary to cure the primary disease.

When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of ageusia?

If the loss of taste does not resolve on its own within a few days, you should contact your doctor, so that the cause and the remedy for the condition are determined.
