Urology: Humanitas & the new Training Center for Robotic Urologic Surgery

Written by Prof. Giorgio Ferruccio Guazzoni

Humanitas is the first center in Italy and one of the few in Europe to receive a certificate for international training in robotic urologic surgery. Thanks to this recognition, awarded on December 1st of last year by the European Society of Urology (ESU), Humanitas takes an important step towards becoming a center for education and innovation.

What type of recognition did the Unit for Urology at Humanitas receive?

The Unit of Urology at Humanitas, directed by Prof. Giorgio Guazzoni, was recognized by the European Society of Urology as a European center and the first center in Italy for training in the field of robotic urologic surgery. The doctors who will join the training, at both national and international levels, will have the opportunity to deepen their fields through various surgical techniques, from simulations to more complex interventions. With hands-on courses, they will be able to take part in training sessions and learn about different surgical topics. “The complexity and refinement of the surgical techniques – explains Prof. Guazzoni – require that training take place in one of a few specialized centers, and done with the highest levels of performance and with highly specialized surgeons that use the newest and most modern technologies.”

Where is robotic urologic surgery applied?

Robotic surgery is the most important method to ever be applied in urology. Radical prostatectomy (removal of the prostate gland) with robot-assisted approach allows you to achieve better functional results in terms of continence and sexual potency. Robotic urologic surgery is often the preferred procedure in comparison to other complex urological procedures, ranging from renal disease with particular reference to tumors (saving the kidney or radical surgery) adrenal disorders and ureteral disorders.
