Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine. Hyperthyroidism can significantly accelerate the body’s metabolism leading to sudden weight loss, rapid or irregular heartbeat, sweating and irritability.

There are several treatment options for hyperthyroidism including medications and surgery. In most cases, hyperthyroidism responds well under treatment; however, if left untreated it can cause serious complications.

Symptoms

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism can be mistaken for other health conditions; therefore, it can be difficult to diagnose. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism may include:

  • Sudden weight loss (despite the amount of food intake)
  • Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia), irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) or heart palpitations
  • Increased appetite
  • Sweating
  • Nervousness, irritability, anxiety
  • Increased sensitivity to heat
  • Tremor in the hands or fingers
  • Fatigue and muscle weakness
  • Skin thinning
  • Frequent bowel movements
  • Enlarged thyroid gland (goiter)
  • Changes in menstrual patterns
  • Fine, brittle hair
