Toxic Shock Syndrome

Toxic shock syndrome is very rare and potentially deadly infection.

This syndrome was discovered in the late 70’s of the 20. century.

This syndrome usually occurs in younger population, aged 15-20, and more often in women during their menstrual period.

Causes

Toxic shock syndrome is caused by a toxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus and certain streptococci bacteria, which enter the blood system from the main point of infection. Genetics is not a significant factor.

Symptoms

Toxic shock syndrome’s symptoms are:

  • high temperature
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • strong muscle pains
  • rash, similar to sunburns
  • confusion, in some cases

Risk factors

The risk factor for toxic shock syndrome is use of tampons, which are an ideal environment for bacteria proliferation in the inner vagina, especially if the tampon remains longer than instructed.

Complications

One of toxic shock syndrome complication is acute kidney failure.
